At our annual business meeting held in October, SIETAR DC was decidedly the favorite choice among names for our group. SIETAR DC is affiliated with SIETAR USA, although there is no formalized relationship between the two groups at the present time. We hope you all like the new name. It was chosen because the SIETAR name is widely recognized in the international community. We hope it will continue to attract interested participants from all across the DC-metro area. Spread the word. For more about the annual business meeting, see inside Please Join Us For The November SIETAR DC Meeting Wednesday November 14th 6:15 p.m.-8:00 p.m. IMI Offices 4200 Wisconsin Avenue, NW 3rd Floor Metro: Tenleytown-AU Metro (Red Line) VISIT US ONLINE Did you know that SIETAR DC is online? We are developing a full service website, but in the meantime, you are welcome to join us on our listserv where you can write, receive and respond to messages, share information, and access the SIETAR DC calendar and other relevant files. Our listserv guru Cora Dickson has downloaded NAFSA job listings onto the site. Other group members have posted job listings and interesting events and opportunities around town as well. How to sign up: Send an email from the address where you want to receive listserv e-mails to HYPERLINK "mailto:SIETAR-DC-subscribe@yahoogroups.com." SIETAR-DC-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING Our October evening started out with the Laughter Club. This icebreaker exercise, presented by Barrie Zucal, was an amusing and enjoyable way to get the evening going. As implied by its title, the exercise involved a lot of laughter we learned greeting laughs, silent laughs, humming laughs and more. Barrie is a Certified Laughter Leader and would like to extend the use of these techniques to intercultural groups in the future laughter, after all, is an international, intercultural language. By now you know that the name SIETAR DC was overwhelmingly approved as the new name of our group (replacing SIMWG). The vote was taken at our annual business meeting in October. Our new Treasurer, Lydia Gizdavcic, presented us with the Treasurers Report. The current balance in the SIETAR DC account is $1,987.47. Most of the funds in the account come from membership dues and are used to pay for mailing the monthly newsletter and for refreshments at our meetings. There may be some additional costs associated with the development of the website as well. No other decisions were made about spending the funds at this time. REMINDER: The current SIETAR DC year began in September. If you have not yet paid your dues, please fill out the form on the back of the newsletter and return it to Stephen Moles. Following the business meeting, we heard a brief presentation by Dr. Edward Stewart about a program he is developing in the DC area to help create understanding across the cultural divides that have resulted in the recent violence among ethnic groups. Dr. Stewart will speak to us again in November. NOVEMBER 14th MEETING: A RESPONSE TO ETHNIC TERROR Dr. Edward Stewart is a founding father of the intercultural field and has a Ph.D. in experimental psychology in perception from the University of Texas at Austin. He has written several classic intercultural books, including, American Cultural Patterns: Cross-Cultural Perspective, as well as a variety of articles about culture and decision-making. Dr. Stewart will talk with us about the Tension Anticipation System, the roots of the system in Slovakia, the relationship of the system to major intercultural concepts and methodologies, and how the system might be adapted to and implemented in the United States. Dr. Stewart will discuss how he envisions using the Tension Anticipation System here in the Washington, DC area in the aftermath of September 11th to improve the dialogue between a variety of ethnic groups, including fundamentalist Muslims. While still in development, the Response to Ethnic Terror project would involve identifying opinion leaders from a representative sample of ethnic groups in the Washington, DC, Montgomery County and Prince Georges County area; measuring the ethnic tensions; and designing, developing and conducting training programs to reduce ethnic tensions in our area. Please join us on November 14th to learn more about Dr. Stewarts experiences and how you can participate in this new project. Would you like to receive the newsletter by e-mail? If so, please contact Stephen Moles at: HYPERLINK "mailto:stevemoles@juno.com" stevemoles@juno.com.
